Are my Foreign coins worth anything?

February 28, 2015

We get this question quite often. I think it is interesting that a lack of recognition to a coin leads a person to ,question its value. We see lots of foreign coins that are simply modern currency. Someone has traveled abroad sometime in the last 25 years and brought back some of the money they used to buy goods and services. Those coins generally don't have additional value up and above their face value unless there is silver content in the coin. This is not unlike us coinage. Also the issue of age comes into play. Here in the U.S. we think that something is old if it is over 100 years old, but what about in Europe? Is something really old if its 100 years old? Generally no. I remember the first time I visited the UK. I was astounded by how old things were. I do still think it's important to have your foreign coins valued, but unless your dealing with something really rare, your coins are probably not the treasures you might expect. Last, there is the issue of liquidity. It can be hard for a coin shop to sell those foreign coins purchased from individuals.  Just a few things to keep in mind...
