Top Coins to Add to Your Collection

October 4, 2021

Rare coins are desirable for any coin collection because of the beauty and value they add. Holding a coin is like holding history in your hand. You might be carrying a coin that a soldier carried with him during one of the world wars. Or perhaps you have a coin that was in the pocket of a pioneer headed into the Wild West. Such old coins are treasures, and if you are a smart collector, you can turn these into a good investment.

Here are some of the top coins you might want to think about adding to your collection.

The 1921 Peace Dollar

The Peace silver dollar was designed by Anthony DeFrancisci before it was produced in December of 1921. Its purpose was to commemorate the peace that followed World War I, and the idea was hatched by Farran Zerbe, who was president of the American Numismatic Association from 1908 to 1910. His idea gained popularity, and DeFrancisci designed a beautiful coin.

The first Peace silver dollars were minted in 1921, and they were too difficult to strike properly. The dies were made with recesses that were so deep, metal was unable to flow into them completely, which led to the coins being created with a lack of detail. Since the coins were not struck until so late in the year, there was just a limited supply of them. They were snatched up by the public quite quickly. Although these coins are somewhat rare, beginner coin collectors can usually add them to their collection for a reasonable cost.

The Morgan Silver Dollar

Engraver George T. Morgan created the design of this coin to be used on a half dollar, but it was ultimately modified for use on the dollar in 1878. This was during a time when the U.S. Mint was very busy producing silver dollars because of the Bland-Allison Act. This act was responsible for the U.S. Treasury buying a certain amount of silver and putting it into circulation as silver dollar coins.

The Doubled Die Lincoln Cent

This is a popular coin among Lincoln penny collectors that many hope to add to their collection. The Doubled Die Lincoln Cent is probably the most famous error coin out there. The story behind the coin started when the U.S. Mint discovered an error after striking more than 20,000 coins. The coin die that received two impressions was offset one from the other, creating an error. Once the error was revealed, the mint decided that it would be too expensive to scrap the existing coins, so they stayed in circulation.

Other Popular Coins

Other coins you might consider adding to your collection include:

  • The 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent
  • The 1914-D Lincoln Cent
  • The 1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel
  • The 1916-D Mercury Dime
  • 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter
